Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural product made up of fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Diatoms are a major group of algae and are among the most common types of phytoplankton. Algae’s included organisms range from unicellular genera, such as Chlorella and the diatoms, to multicellular forms, such as giant kelp, a large brown alga which may grow up to 50m in length. Most are aquatic.

Diatomaceous earth is positively charged, and bad bacteria and fungi like candida are negatively charged. It is also very very sharp on a very small scale. So, as the DE works its way through your digestive system it attracts the candida and bad bacteria to it. Then because of its sharpness, it cuts up and kills the bacteria, allowing your body to rid of it. These old tiny fossils don’t harm the human body but act like razor blades to the exoskeleton of the candida. It also has the ability to improve the body’s use of calcium, improve bone mineralization, protect joints and fight effects of aging.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth has a strong ionic (negative) charge as amorphous/elemental silica. Many people notice that taking DE gives them a sense of more energy (this is because of the way silica stimulates circulation and the metabolism), which is great earlier in the day and then magnesium supplements are often used before bed because their effect is helpful to relax.

It’s always best to start out light for the first week or so (7 to 10 days) to allow the body to get accustomed, and then work up to a full dose. Taking it in water (stirred) on an empty stomach with water will always bring about the most effective in terms of cleansing and detox. If you are using the DE as a supplement for more than 2 months, it’s very important to check in on magnesium levels. This can be simply ensuring there are lots of healthy green leafy veggies like kale, chard, or spinach.
